Description of Committee responsibilities
Student Representative: organizes and runs student lunches; represents student voice at faculty meetings when needed; keeps record of grad student committees and positions

Graduate Student Lunches:  lunches are organized by the student rep once per semester (fall & spring), providing the opportunity to answer student questions, discuss any concerns with departmental policy, and plan future academic and social events.

Student/Postdoc/Faculty Committee:  meets every other month to address topics of interests to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.  Representatives are responsible to initiate constituent concerns and communicate decisions.

Bernard Amos Memorial Lecture Committee: plans and organizes the annual Bernard Amos Memorial Lecture which takes places at the end of each spring semester. Duties include selecting and communicating with the keynote speaker, planning the events that surround the memorial lecture (i.e. a departmental poster session, meals with the keynote speaker), and providing logistical support during the day of the event.

Faculty Review Committee: student representation for reviewing applications for faculty positions

Retreat Planning Committee: chair is responsible for delegating responsibilities to committee members, overseeing planning and budget, and communicating with student rep/faculty to determine location, date, and size of retreat; committee is responsible for inviting attendees and keeping track of attendance, science and social aspects, making all reservations, obtaining sponsors, handling catering and meal restrictions, determining T-shirt design and ordering, and any other details they wish to include

Social Committee: responsible for planning and executing department social events.  Graduate students from umbrella programs are invited to introduce them to our program.  A working budget is provided by the department.
Hammes Faculty Teaching Award Committee: committee consists of a second year and first year student; obtain nominations of departmental professor(s) recommended by the graduate students for an excellence in teaching and mentoring award; attend a dinner to meet with other department’s representatives and determine award recipients; if your nominee is selected you then work with the committee chair to prepare a small write-up and help present the award at the annual faculty retreat
Graduate Student Affairs Liaison:  responsible for participating in and coordinating other graduate students to participate in the GSA spring recruitment events.  The GSA conducts on-site recruitment at institutions the recruitment committee selects.  Predominately, the places are the undergraduate institutions of the members.
GPSC Representative: attend meetings every other week during the fall and spring semesters to represent immunology student voice; keep immunology students informed on GPSC matters and events primarily through being an email contact; attend GPSC summer retreat (optional).

Hammes Faculty Teaching Award Committee: committee consists of a second year and first year student; obtain nominations of departmental professor(s) recommended by the graduate students for an excellence in teaching and mentoring award; attend a dinner to meet with other department's representatives and determine award recipients; if your nominee is selected you then work with the committee chair to prepare a small write-up and help present the award at the annual faculty retreat

Graduate Student Symposium Committee: Every year (usually in Oct/Nov), a committee of graduate students across the biological and medical sciences organizes a Graduate Student Symposium.  This day-long event highlights the breadth of research being performed by graduate students and aims to give them an opportunity to present their work.  Traditionally, the day consists of morning talks, an afternoon poster session and keynote address by a high-profile scientist invited from outside Duke.  This event is 100% organized and run by the GSS student committee.

The GSS committee is sub-divided into three areas: Advertising, Logistics (getting food/poster boards/space) and Abstracts (collecting and editing submitted student abstracts).  Appointments to the GSS committee are intended to be two-years: the first year you learn and the second year you help to lead. The overall time commitment is not tremendous, but there are a few days/weeks a year where you might have to devote some substantial time to this job (maybe 5-10hrs in a week).  The best thing about being a GSS rep is that you get to learn how to organize a scientific event and meet people outside of your department. The worst thing about being a GSS rep is that it can be hard to entice graduate students to participate in such an event with such a broad scope.
